Madhouse at the End of the Earth: The Belgica's Journey into the Dark Antarctic Night Cover Image

The little-known saga of the 1897 Belgian Antarctic Expedition (yes! Belgian!) is no icy, barren wasteland for author Julian Sancton. Beset by low funding, feeble leadership, mutiny, and navigational errors, the Belgica seems doomed even before it inevitably gets stuck in the Antarctic ice pack. But the polar winter is where this tale begins to diverge from more famous expeditions. Through ingenuity and desperation, the polylingual crew scrapes together a bold and madcap plan for escape, which adds unexpected excitement to the climax of this narrative history. Knowing that one young officer will eventually attain the South Pole years later (and that another will end up in federal prison for mail fraud) gives readers a compelling reason to keep turning pages into the cold, dark night.

The National Road: Dispatches from a Changing America Cover Image

Published: Counterpoint - November 30th, 2021

Having crisscrossed the country by car hundreds of times in the past couple decades, essayist and journalist Tom Zoellner is uniquely suited to report on the beautiful weirdness of roadside America. The reporting is accurate, unassuming, humane, moderate. The writing is concisely apt and never lazy. What's missing here is a quirky originality that other essayists have brought to this genre. Sarah Vowell, John Jeremiah Sullivan, Bill Bryson, and David Foster Wallace have all penned pieces that tackle Zoellner's subjects with more verve. Where Zoellner does best is when he hews closer to memoir than travelogue. "Mormon Historical Sites by Night," "Drive," "Villages," and the opening and closing chapters are the most personal - and the most compelling - selections in the book. "The Whole Hoop of the World" is exemplary. Zoellner explains his quest to climb the highest peak in all fifty states. What emerges in between his sheepish acknowledgement of an obsession is a perfect glimpse of early 21st century America: scarred by capitalism run amok, tainted by tackiness, languishing in alienation, and ineffably terrifying and gorgeous.

If Joseph O'Connor was inspired by the theory that Bram Stoker based Dracula on his boss Henry Irving, then it's a delightful surprise that SHADOWPLAY became something even richer and stranger. Filled with eye-popping set pieces (Irving leaping into the audience as a rabid Hamlet, a bonkers cameo by black-teethed Oscar Wilde) and absurdly delicious dialogue, SHADOWPLAY succeeds far beyond its original premise. It plays perfectly to the cheap seats and boxes, raising from Stoker's frustrated life a host of themes: literary ambition, gothic horror, gender fluidity, Irishness, and the always-more-interesting drama occurring backstage.

The Splendid and the Vile: A Saga of Churchill, Family, and Defiance During the Blitz Cover Image
$34.00
ISBN: 9780593172070
Availability: In Stock at Warehouse - Usually Arrives in 1-5 Days
Published: Random House Large Print - March 10th, 2020

Brushing aside considerations of whether or not we needed another Churchill or WWII book (he seems preemptively defensive about this already), THE SPLENDID AND THE VILE delivers exactly what we love about Erik Larson. This is a painstakingly researched, novelistic popular history that shines a searchlight into one very eventful year in world history. Spanning May 10, 1940 to May 10, 1941, Larson writes ostensibly about Churchill and the Blitz, but it's the more obscure figures who really get their due. This is Larson at his best: elevating the unsung heroes of Churchill's network and staff. The liveliest voices come from the diaries of John Colville, Churchill's secretary, and his precocious teenage daughter Mary. Descriptions of Churchill's idiosyncrasies aren't as amusing as Larson thinks they are. But plenty of thrilling sideplots - like British intelligence slowly realizing that the Germans are using radio beacons to pinpoint bombing raids - have the feel of a Le Carré novel. I would read Larson writing about the history of box factories, but THE SPLENDID AND THE VILE is a scintillating and sometimes terrifying glimpse at the existential battle for the future of Western Europe.

The Second Sleep: A novel Cover Image
$16.95

Published: Vintage - August 25th, 2020

Robert Harris once again delivers an original historical thriller with a compelling central mystery. When young medieval priest Christopher Fairfax visits a remote village to bury the parson, he quickly realizes that the old rector stumbled into something sinister and dangerous. It may have gotten him killed. Fairfax sets out to uncover the village secrets, but Harris can't resist revealing his clever premise very early. This doesn't detract at all from the suspense and action that follow, but the climactic twist in the final pages doesn't live up to the anticipation of an epiphany that we share with the characters.

Few novels in 2020 will be as highly anticipated as THE GLASS HOTEL, Emily St. John Mandel's follow-up to 2014's STATION ELEVEN. This book contains very few of the speculative-fiction elements that made STATION ELEVEN a crossover hit, but fans of Mandel will not be disappointed. Brilliantly unfolding the story of a Ponzi scheme's collapse, Mandel reveals the interconnected relationships of her cast one snapshot at a time. THE GLASS HOTEL is as gripping as a crime thriller but populated with characters of such poignant humanity that readers will luxuriate in every page.
